TW Newsdesk, Nov 24: Trinamool Youth Congress president Sayani Ghosh, who was arrested by Tripura Police last week, said she was let off on bail because there was no evidence against her and the charges levelled at her were fabricated.

Sayani Ghosh was arrested on November 21 and charged under sections of criminal intimidation and attempt to murder by the Tripura Police. It was alleged that she had tried to run over BJP workers at a public meeting.

“The allegations were that I was trying to mow down people but I am not from the BJP that I will do so,” she quipped.

Attacking the BJP government in Tripura, the actor-turned-politician accused the ruling party of waging political violence and stoking communal sentiments ahead of the local body elections in the state on November 25.

“They [BJP workers] were chasing me. I said ‘khela hobe’ to the ones who chased me. BJP leaders come and hurl their religious slogans. Has anyone been arrested?” demanded Ghosh while speaking exclusively to India Today in Kolkata.

She also reiterated the allegation that TMC workers and even journalists were roughed up by BJP workers when they were gathered outside the police station where Ghosh was held.

This, after the Supreme Court directed the Tripura government to ensure that no political party, including the TMC, in the fray for local body polls is prevented from pursuing electoral rights in accordance with law and from campaigning in a peaceful and orderly manner.

“We believe in the Supreme Court but we still fear that there will be violence by Biplab Deb’s men. Even journalists are not spared, but we won’t back down,” said Ghosh.

The youth leader asserted that she will return to Tripura soon and take her party’s cause to the grassroots as she is not deterred by the BJP’s tactics to intimidate the Opposition.

“I am not afraid; I will go back again as I am from TMC which believes in grassroots politics. The more you cut grassroot leaves, they grow back well. We won’t budge an inch,” Sayani Ghosh signed off.

TMC supremo and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee will be meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi later in the day. During the tete-a-tete, she is expected to take up the issue of violence against TMC workers in Tripura, among other pressing subjects.
